Guys, Girls and a Jerk is a sequel to Stephanie, Nathalie, Caroline and Vincent, the debut of writer/producer/actor Simon Boisvert. It takes place 5 years later, when Vincent the jerk in the title decides to start an dating service not only to make easy money, but also as a way to score with fragile women. When you take into account that Guys, Girls and a Jerk was shot in Montreal over 7 days for $50,000 (Canadian!), it's a decent movie. In it, we follow the intertwined lives of six characters, which are filled with sex, lies and betrayals. Simon Boisvert does a pretty good job as Vincent, a despicable character with no morals whatsoever. Vincent is disillusioned about love, and he tries to make up for it by sleeping with as many girls as possible, and he will do anything to achieve his goals. However, the best performances are those of Paul Ahmarani as Éric and of Natasha Leroux as Caroline. Ahmarani, who won critical acclaim with his role in La moitié gauche du frigo (a.k.a. The Left-Hand Side of the Fridge), plays Éric a dim-witted and bizarre character who works at the "agency" with Vincent. Leroux plays Caroline, Vincent's ex-girlfriend who returns to him after five years apart. The biggest problem with this movie, apart from some less-than-stellar performances by some of the supporting cast, is that there's no one to root for. The characters aren't just flawed, they don't seem to have any morals. If you ever have any relationship problems, I highly suggest you watch Guys, Girls and a Jerk. It should at least help you put your own relationships into perspective. Reviewed on July 19, 2003 |
